Louis XII

The tapestry presents the theme of “triumph”, but what is more intriguing is that this tapestry is part of a larger series created for the French king, Louis XII. He had previously received a manuscript of the Triumphs of Petrarch, which may have led to his desire for these ornate tapestries. Interestingly, although the poem is originally written in Italian, this tapestry features a French inscription which demonstrates its individualization for the king.
