Dionysus

This segment of a stone casket predates the medieval period but establishes a precedent for interest in symbols of status and power. Dated to approximately 215-225 A.D., the sarcophagus depicts the “triumph” of the ancient Greek god Dionysus and demonstrates the extravagance of Roman celebrations of power which people in the Middle Ages wanted to emulate.
