Andronikos

This object represents one of the potential source objects for the Latin Imitation of the Coin of Andronikos. Note the depiction of St. George, which itself is commemorative: he replaced the Virgin Mary in order to suggest strength and force to the people of Byzantium during a time of impending invasion.

This portrait depicts Andronikos I being displayed in front of his people, with his right hand hung around his neck in a mark of shame. It serves as an example of the general consensus of Andronikos I’s success as a ruler, which was very little.
