The Virgin Mary
This is a stained glass replica of the woodcut "Virgin and Child."
This pair of objects shows how an artist’s legacy transcends their own work and medium. The Virgin and Child is a woodcut by Hans Burgkmair (German, 1473-1531) depicting Mary holding the infant Jesus. While painter and etchers often also painted glass, Burgkmair most likely did not. Nevertheless, when Madonna and Child was created in 1526, the stained glass replica of the woodcut included the artist’s initials, although he was not involved.
