Birds and Religious Symbolism

The rooster in the center of bowl symbolizes hope while the fish symbolizes bounty. The rooster is a significant figure during this period. Roosters are held in high virtue within the Muslim tradition - there have been many accounts of Prophet Muhammad admiring the rooster, since it calls everyone to prayer with the beauty of its crowing. The dove pendant, on the other hand, reveals imagery that is strongly relevant to both Christian and Islamic cultures. In particular, in Christian/Byzantine religious iconography, doves are frequently associated with the Holy Spirit, and often appear in scenes of the Annunciation and the baptism of Christ. This means that the presence of these birds on the objects likely reflect major religious themes from the Middle Ages, making the important parts of the iconography of the period.
