Animals and Social Hierarchies

In both this 13th century chess piece and the 17th century Indian dagger, animal imagery immediately communicated the owner’s social class. The martial value of horses throughout the Middle Ages allowed equine imagery to symbolize an aristocratic subset of the population, especially in Europe. As notions of chivalry emerged (from the French “chevalier” or horseman”), distinctive understandings of social behavior augmented the traditional military skill of horsemanship.
