Exhibit Summary

Welcome to an upper-class late-Medieval European home! The items in this home will span a variety of countries in Europe. In particular, the items this exhibit focuses on are those that one can readily find in a European home, and that were significantly influenced by Eastern cultures. This exhibit focuses on these objects because modern conceptions of the Middle Ages often look at Europe and the East as separate entities, in large part because of the dominance of Christianity in Europe, and Islam in the East. In reality, these cultures had significant levels of cultural exchange, especially in terms of Eastern ideas and techniques getting incorporated into Europe. By exploring this home, you see how items of upper-class individuals from across Europe are rooted in Eastern cultures in a variety of ways.
